Choosing Great Interior Paint Colors

Choosing colors for your home can be an exciting task, and there are many ways to approach this decision. Consider the following suggestions before you talk your color choices over with a painting professional.

Pick a Scheme

A common suggestion of designers is to stick to the rule of three, with the dominant color on the walls, the secondary in linens and upholstery and the accent color on small items.  You can also choose a scheme featuring colors that are adjacent on the color wheel, such as green and blue, for a soothing effect. If you want to feature a particular color throughout your home, work from your most formal area and tie a color from that room into the rest of the house.

Consider the Role of Neutrals

While you may lean more toward bright colors, don’t be too quick to underestimate the power of neutrals. Gray is quite versatile; it can go warm or cool depending the other colors in your interior painting plan. Black makes other colors stand out for a more dynamic look. White softens a room by lightening the space. If you can’t choose one neutral, you may even consider a mix of neutrals as your overall scheme.

Think Outside the Box

If you want something unique, discuss ways to buck conventional design wisdom with your painters. Do you have a signature color? There’s nothing wrong with a monochromatic design. If you have a pattern in the room that you love, such as a print on a pillow or a chair, use it as a focal point and talk to your designer about building the room around it. Choose colors that contrast for a bolder statement, such as black and white or chocolate brown and yellow. Finally, don’t be afraid to have an accent wall to feature a fantastic color, even in a small room.

Your interior painting plan depends largely on your own personal style. Work with your painters to come up with a design that makes your home your own masterpiece.
